The martyrdom of Husayn was a great religious significance and had a deep heart-searching after-effect upon the Shi`is, giving a new turn to the mode and nature of the Shi`i movement.

شهادت حسين (ع) از اهميت فوق العاده زيادي برخوردار بود و تاثيري بسيار شگرف بر شيعيان بجا گذاشت. اين شهادت دوره اي نو را براي ظهور و بروز نهضت تشيع بوجود آورد.

The tragic fate of the grandson of the Prophet stirred religious and moral sentiments

سرنوشت غم انگيز نواده پيامبر، عواطف اخلاقي و مذهبي مردم را به هم ريخت.

particulary among those of Kufan followers of the House of the Prophet who had so zealously asked Husayn to come to Iraq to guide them on what they considered to be the path of God.

علي الخصوص در ميان پيروان كوفي خاندان پيامبر كه با اشتياق فراوان از حسين تقاضا كرده بودند تا رهسپار عراق شود و آنان را به مسيري كه راه خداوند به حساب ميرفت هدايت كند.

But when Husayn came to Iraq they did not or could not stand with him in the hour of trial.

ولي پس از ورود حسين (ع) به عراق، در مرحله امتحان با او همراه نشدند و يا نتوانستند با او همراه شوند.

Soon afterwards, however, they realized that their inability, or rather weakness, had been the cause of the tragedy.

در عين حال به زودي متوجه شدند كه عدم توانائي و يا تا حدودی سستي ايشان بود كه موجب آن فاجعه (و مصيبت) شده بود

A deep sense of repentance set in, provoking their religious conscience; and in order to expiate their negligence and obtain God`s forgiveness, they thought they must make similar sacrifices.

احساس عميق ندامت در ايشان بوجود آمد كه در نتيجه وجدان ديني ايشان را برانگيخت و درنتيجه بر آن شدند كه اهمال كاري خويش را جبران كنند و بخشايش خداوند را بدست آورند. از اين رو انديشيدند كه بايد جانبازيهاي مشابهي را انجام دهند.

They believed that they could only prove their real repentance by exposing themselves to death while seeking vengeance for the blood of Husayn.

امعتقد شدند كه تنها از طريق جانبازي و انتقام گرفتن از خون حسين (ع) مي توانند توبه واقعي خود را ثابت كنند.

Hence they named themselves the Tawwabun (penitents) and are known in Islamic history by this self-imposed title.

بنابراين خود را توابون (توبه كاران) ناميدند و در سراسر تاريخ اسلام به همين عنوان خود خواسته مشهور شدند.

This movement proved to be an important step forward in the consolidation of Shi`i Islam.
